Summary

The drinking game Beer Pong with Paddles, which is very similar to Beirut and Beer Pong without Paddles, involves two competing teams of people attempting to hit a ping pong ball across a table into a cup of beer. If the ball goes in the cup, points are awarded and the opponent must chug the beer.

Rules

Game play here is very similar to ping-pong, which can be played with either singles or doubles on each side of the table. If you’re thinking, “What the hell do I need paddles for, I thought you just threw the ball across the table!”, then you should check out Beer Pong without Paddles and Beirut. To play Beer Pong with Paddles, follow the setup instructions and rules below:

Setup to play Beer Pong:
- Fill 2 plastic cups with beer, about 5 drinks each
- Place the cups of beer on each side of the table
- Cups should be centered, and one paddle’s width from the end.

Game play:

  1. Start playing ping-pong
  2. First team to reach 21 points wins the game
  3. If you hit your opponents cup, and they are unable to return the ball, you get 1 point and they have to take 1 drink.
  4. If you hit the ball into your opponents cup, you get 5 points and they have to chug the beer.

Game Rules:

  1. When a cup is completely empty, it gets re-filled
  2. No player on the receiving side may touch the ball before it hits the table or a cup
  3. If you knock a cup over, you are charged with a penalty and must chug a beer
  4. A ball cannot be auto returned by taking a lucky bounce of a cup
  5. If the ball hits the ground, it’s a dead ball

Strategy:
Typically you want to arc your hits over the net so that you have a better chance of getting the ball in the cup. Keep in mind though that after the first bounce, the other team can return the ball, so you want to make sure that your shots are long enough to reach the cup without bouncing.

Origin of Beer Pong:
Although no one can actually be certain where this original drinking game was created, the New York Times credits its creation to student at Dartmouth college back in the early 1940’s. Numerous other sources also site instances of the game being played in fraternity houses at Dartmouth throughout the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and on. The version of the game without paddles, often called Beirut, has somewhat of a hazier past. Student newspapers speculate that Beirut was created in the 1980’s, probably by student at Lehigh University or Bucknell University.
